Presidential vacations

January 16, 2009 --

"..George W. Bush is today making his final visit to Camp David as's trip marks Mr. Bush's 149th visit to the presidential retreat.

...bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days...Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there. " --

President Bush, over 8 years took 967 days total time off [ vacations or retreats ]

August 3, 2005 --

"..The August getaway is Bush's 49th trip to his cherished ranch since taking office and Tuesday was the 319th day that Bush has spent, entirely or partially, in Crawford -- roughly 20 percent of his presidency to date...

...The more vociferous among Bush's foes have noted that he spent a month at the ranch shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, when critics assert he should have been more attentive to warning signs....

...Until now, probably no modern president was a more famous vacationer than Ronald Reagan, who loved spending time at his ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif. According to an Associated Press count, Reagan spent all or part of 335 days in Santa Barbara over his eight-year presidency -- a total that Bush will surpass this month in Crawford with 3 1/2 years left in his second term..." --

Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton took less time off than Reagan, Bush Sr, Bush Jr., Obama.

"....Reagan spent all or part of 866 days at Camp David or his ranch in California during his eight years in office...." -- Reagan Library.

August 22, 2010  --

"..By the end of his trip, President Obama will have taken nine vacations and visited Camp David 14 times for a total of 80 vacation days since he took office. But at the same point in his first term, President George W. Bush had taken far more time away - 14 trips to his ranch in Midland, Texas, and 40 to Camp David, totaling 225 days.

Presidents, though, are never truly on vacation. Crises often arise - for example, the Christmas Day bomber tried to strike while President Obama was vacationing in Hawaii. For President Bush, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf during a long stay at his ranch.

The White House says they're confident that most Americans understand that with such a high-pressure job, a president deserves and needs some time to unwind and recharge...." --

First year in office:

President Reagan, in 1981, spent all or part of 42 days away from the White House "on vacation" at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif

President George W. Bush spent even more time away from the presidential mansion in the nation’s capital than Reagan. Of the 77 total "vacation" trips the former president made to his Texas ranch while in office, nine of them — all or part of 69 days — came during his first year as president in 2001

President George H.W. Bush, spent less time "on vacation" during his first year than his son, but spent more days than President Obama. all or part of 40 days — to the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1989.
